  • The Dorset Chef Jacket Story

The Dorset chef jacket does not require complicated ingredients, it doesn’t even require that many of them however, what we do use is the finest that can be found and we know exactly what we are doing with them. We take a roll of premium grade Egyptian cotton, some quality cotton thread, a box of hand rolled buttons and some seriously skilful employees then work our magic. What we are left with is the finest British made chef jacket that can be made.

Cutting the fine Egyptian cotton fabric is a very precise task, this is by far the most expensive fabric that we deal with and must make every cut perfect so as not to damage the fine material. We use a high tech laser cutter to achieve millimetre perfect measurements and to avoid any waste. Once the shapes of the arms, front and back pieces are assembled, we being the slow process of stitching each part to form something almost resembling a Dorset chef jacket.

While we are getting the jacket itself ready, we must also start the production on the button. Every button on the Dorset starts as a small hard ball of composite materials, we then hand roll fabric around the button and stitch it together. By now, the jacket itself has taken shape, the coolmax arm vents have been added and the jacket is ready for the buttons to be hand sewn.

It requires a lot of skill and patience to painstakingly sew each button perfectly onto the Dorset, in fact this one task takes nearly an hour to complete for every single jacket we make. There may be quicker or cheaper ways to put buttons on a jacket, but we do it the hard way because the quality really does pay off. After some quick trims of loose thread, a quick iron press and a wrap in our tissue paper the Dorset chef jacket is ready. This whole process has taken nearly 4 hours.
