World Mental Health Day 10th October - My Mental Health in 10 Words

Posted on Oct 02nd 2020

Background

There have been diseases which have crippled the hospitality industry for far longer than COVID-19. These are depression, anxiety, addiction and suicide. 80% of chefs report having a mental health problem during their career and 50% of front of house. This needs to change, and fast!

The Pilot Light Campaign

That’s why we teamed up with the phenomenal Pilot Light Campaign earlier this year to do our part to support people who need help. We developed the Pilot Light Apron for chefs to wear with £5 every sale going to their campaign.

Pilot Light want to #ignitetheconversation and #burnthesilence around mental health in our industry, and so do we! It is World Mental Health Day on the 10th October and the need to talk about this openly is more important now than ever before.

My Mental Health in 10 Words

We think the best way to ignite the conversation is for as many people as possible to share how they are feeling. The stigma around mental health is thankfully decreasing, but we want it gone for good!

So we are asking both back and front of house to tell us how they are feeling at the moment in 10 words or less, to be an example to people suffering they are not alone, there is no shame in talking about it and to get professional help when necessary.

My Mental Health in 10 Words

So we created this template (above) for people to share on their social media on the 10th October. If you send your quotes to ben@oliverharvey.co.uk with your job title and where you work (if applicable, chef works fine too!) we shall prepare your quote to share on the day.

When you post on the 10th October, we would be so grateful if you could tag ourselves and Pilot Light using the below handles:

@oliverharveychefwear , @pilotlightcampaign & @_soletstalk

We would also be most appreciative if you could use the below hashtags:

#ignitetheconversation #burnthesilence #designedtostandout

If you have any questions please get in touch with Ben.

If you are suffering yourself

We strongly urge you talk about it with friends and family you trust and if things are really bad please get yourself professional help. Hospitality Action, Shout, Mind and other amazing charities are there to support you too!
